Biofeedback test leads me to
homeopathic remedy
How's it working? Read on.
by Tammy Tabor
I'm stressed. I knew that long before visiting Heather Young and
having a biofeedback test performed. What I didn't know was how the
stress was effecting my body.
I admit I was skeptical. I had attended a seminar in which
Mrs. Young, a bioenergetic practitioner and owner of Health Options in
Jacksonville, performed a test on Dennis Doyle, a local chiropractor, and
discussed the results of his scan. To be honest, I thought the
whole process was a bit of hocus-pocus, especially when Mrs. Young started
talking about remedies, but I'll get to that later.
However, having a scan done on myself greatly lessened my
skepticism. Several problem areas that showed up in the scan were
symptoms that I had recently discussed with my doctor. For example,
I've been extremely thirsty lately, and it's a thirst I can't seem to
quench. My doctor gave me a glucose test to make sure I do not have
diabetes (I don't). The scan showed that I am extremely dehydrated.
Prior to the test, Mrs. Young asked me some questions about my eating
habits, such as whether I regularly drink soda, coffee or alcohol, and do
I eat sugar, white flour or Nutrasweet. These items have no
nutritional value, Mrs. Young said.
The test began with Mrs. Young attaching electrodes to my wrists, fingers,
ankles, and head. The test produced a stress map that illustrated
what my body is seeking in order to restore its balance.
"It is basically asking your body 'Do you like this, yes or
no?'" Mrs. Young said. "Everything has electrical energy
attached to it. We're not testing the substance, but its
energy." The test scanned 3,000 substances and pick out the top
100 substances my body is craving. "I could do all 6,000
substances, but it's too much information, and it's not helpful."
Mrs. Young said.
The average test takes 20 minutes. Other test results that made me
think, "Mmm, maybe there is something to this," included my
registering high in the pine category. My house is surrounded by pine
trees, and I live next to a Christmas tree farm.
Mrs. Young also asked me whether I live in an old house (I do), because
the scan showed that I have been exposed to a lot of molds and fungus (no
jokes, please).
The scan also showed that I have digestion problems, which I have had my
entire life. "Digestion is where most Americans have
problems," Mrs. Young said. It makes me feel so much better to
know I'm not alone.
However, there were some results that I did not believe to pertain to me
at all. "Those are symptoms at a cellular level that are not yet
acute," Mrs. Young explained. "We have to address them to
keep them from becoming acute."
While reading my scan, Mrs. Young said, "You've been exposed to
chemicals. Welcome to America, everyone has. If you think of
all the ways we're assaulted it's amazing that we're healthy at all."
Mrs. Young also performed a single-point test on me. I held a gold
wand in one hand while she tested the various meridians in my body
with a probe. Meridians are pathways in the body which are designed
to carry information throughout the body. The meridian system, while
invisible to the eye, is believed to link all the body's organs and
systems.
This test helped her confirm her findings and narrow down what my body
needs to become balanced. "Your energy level is not
holding," she told me. "The drop is not a good thing, but
it's common. The faster the drop, the more stressed that area
is."
After hearing the results and feeling totally unbalanced, Mrs. Young
assured me that "none of us are totally balanced."
Because Mrs. Young is not a doctor, she is not allowed to make a
diagnosis. "When symptoms of illness are present, we encourage
you to see your family physician," she said. She then gave me a
homeopathic remedy, in the form of a bottle of drops, to help restore
balance.
While taking the remedy there are a few rules. For example, I've had
to give up caffeine (colas and chocolate), which I've done with a few
minor exceptions. Other substances that inhibit the absorption and
effectiveness of the remedies include raw garlic, which should be avoided
for at least one hour before and after taking remedies, and mint,
including candy, chewing gum, toothpaste and mouthwash.
"We want you to brush your teeth," Mrs. Young said.
"But don't take the drops as long as you can taste mint."
The homeopathic remedy should be held under the tongue for at least 10
seconds before swallowing.
I've been taking two remedies (one for dehydration and one for everything
else) for about three weeks, and I can't say that I feel much
different. However, Mrs. Young said it could take awhile before I
notice and real changes. She said healing is occurring on a cellular
level, even though I may not consciously feel it.
"We clear up the superficial stuff first, things you might not
notice," she said. "We heal from the newest symptom to the
oldest. It is frustrating because it takes a long time."
Mrs. Young charges $65 a session and $12 for a bottle of remedy.
"I expect to see clients every six weeks, and it takes about six
months for someone to heal," she said. The procedure is not
covered by insurance.
Mrs. Young, who moved here from Colorado in June, entered the field
because of health concerns for her children. "I didn't get into
this because I like challenges, and I didn't get into this because I have
an entrepreneurial spirit," she said. "I got into it
because of my kids."
At 3 months of age, her youngest child developed allergies and was cranky
all the time. She tried finding help through doctors, but to no
avail. She turned to bioenergetics as a last resort.
After having a body scan and getting a remedy, her child was able to sleep
through the night for the first time in months, and his rashes were gone
in the morning, she said. "It helped resolve stress issues that
nothing else seemed to resolve," she said.
Unlike me, most of Mrs. Young's clients have tried all sorts of treatments
to relieve whatever ails them. "I see people who have tried
everything else, who are at the end of their rope," she said.
Mrs. Young had to complete two years of academic work and a year of
clinical work before becoming a bioenergetic practitioner.
"I have nothing against prescriptions, surgery or doctors," Mrs.
Young said. "This is just one more piece of the puzzle, one
more thing to add to a person's toolbox for wellness."

So
what is bioenergetics -
How does it work?
Bioenergetics is the science of communicating with the human body through
electrical impulse and non-cognitive biofeedback in order to identify the
stress blueprint of the body.
"A measurable energy flow identifies the body's imbalances at a
cellular level long before they are clinically detectable," said
Heather Young, a bioenergetic practitioner and owner of Health options in
Jacksonville.
Studies have shown that stress, especially unresolved long term stress, is
a major contributor to illness. The body's inability to adapt to
prolonged stress often results in a compromised immune function, glandular
dysfunction, depression and degenerative disease.
The goal of bioenergetics is to resolve issues of stress and to restore
the body to good health, Mrs. Young said. Bioenergetics was created
in Germany approximately a half century ago. It used equipment that
measure the energy flowing, or not flowing, through the body's meridians,
or pathways which correspond to different systems of the body. This
energy flow determines the degree to which a body is in balance.
Bioenergetic testing is an effective method for measuring imbalances in
the body and is a widely accepted medical practice throughout Europe and
Canada, Mrs. Young said.
The device used to evaluate the stress responses of the body is called
BodyScan 2010, which is approved by the Food and Drug
Administration. More than 6,000 substances in 52 categories can be
tested within minutes to provide information on energetic imbalances.
The practitioner can then understand how an individual responds to various
substances including chemicals, parasites, viruses, hormones, inhalants,
molds/fungus, vitamins and minerals, and pharmaceuticals, according to
Phazx Symptoms Inc., which manufactures the BodyScan 2010.
By monitoring the body's response to electrical impulse, the equipment
determines energy demands and assists the practitioner in establishing a
treatment protocol to bring the body back into balance.
"The machine costs $30,000, so this is a major commitment," Mrs.
Young said. A person's body has the capacity to heal itself and is
designed for wellness, according to Mrs. Young. "We work to
stimulate and support the body's vast healing potential," she said.
To help restore the body's balance, bioenergetic practitioners prescribe a
remedy to fit the client. They do not treat symptoms or cure
disease. According to information provided by Phazx, clients should
find that, as their energy begins to flow more feely and their body
systems become balanced, their symptoms will clear.
Healing time depends on many factors, including length of condition or
symptoms, seriousness of the condition and a person's willingness to
follow the recommended protocol, according to the company.
